Release: Local nonprofit retains summer music programming despite the pandemic forcing a change in format

INDIANAPOLIS – A recent survey from Girls Rock! Indianapolis shows that the majority
of families are still interested in the organization’s annual summer camp, despite its
move to a virtual format.

The organization hit their goal of 100 camp sign-ups shortly before social distancing
protocols were put in place. GRI surveyed families to gauge interest in alternative
formats and a resounding 93 percent of respondents said they would not withdraw their
camp application. The camp is GRI’s largest annual program, wherein volunteers
provide a positive environment for youth ages 9-16 to develop as both musicians and as

“As a mom myself, I feel for the caregivers out there struggling to find safe activities for
children during a summertime pandemic,” says Michele Marti, GRI’s President, “Our
mission and programming is more important than ever — I am proud to continue to
provide a safe, empowering space for these kids.”

GRI will use an online music education platform, Soundtrap, to provide daily workshops
and music lessons with the campers. It was chosen for its browser-based accessibility
and its closed-circuit format, providing a collaborative platform that only approved
campers and volunteers can use. Camp will be held July 13-25.

“My daughter loves this camp — it is the one thing she is most looking forward to this
summer,” said one caregiver in response to the survey.
